Whilst racing online in Forza Motorsport 2 (and I'm sure in Forza Motorsport 3 too). We keep hearing the same complaints about cars from people who are trying to make their own tunes. In this FAQ section, we have tried to answer some of the most common questions and problems people encounter when tuning a car.
Q) Why does my car understeers in lower speed corners?
A) Understeer is easily resolved in slower corners by changing the 'TOE' on the car. For FWD cars increase the positive toe on the front wheels. For RWD cars increase the negative toe on the rear wheels. For AWD cars increase the toe on both the front and back wheels equally. - do small changes and then test to find the right balance for you.
Q) Why is my car not handling the road too well?
A) The most important part of handling is the alignment of the car. the tires are the only part of the car that actually touch the ground. Firstly check your camber, using the telemetry in the test drive mode, check you tire temps. You want the inside of your tire to be around 6 - 10 degrees warmer than the outside of the tire. To increase the inside temperature you need to increase the negative camber on the wheels and vice versa if you are running too hot.
Q) Why does my car seem unstable under heavy braking?
A) With the car slowing down from high speeds, the car will naturally want to go sideways. Increase the caster level to settle the car down under heavy breaking.
Q) Why does my RWD car wheel spin a lot when I put the power down?
A) An easy way to cure this is to lower your rear springs. Being softer on the rear of the car will help push the rear wheels into the tarmac and reduce the wheel spin. You can also soften the rear dampers slightly and also reduce the rear tire pressure a little. In all of these cases you should make small changes and then test the car to find the right balance for your style.
Q) Why does my car keep bottoming out on certain parts of the track?
A) Although cars look cool running a few mm's from the ground, it's not always practical if you are running on a bumpy track. The aim is to try and get the car as low as possible with bottoming out. If you find the car is scraping the floor, raise the ride height slightly.
Q) Why is my car too bouncy on bumps and curbs?
A) If you are experiencing a bit of bounce, increase your rebound damping slightly. Equally if you are just skating over the top of the curbs, you will need to decrease you rebound slightly. Once again, tweak your setup in small ammounts and test again.
